General Introduction
Tritium is a radioactive Isotope of Hydrogen. It is used in medical applications (drug labelling), in luminescent light sources for watches and optics and as tracer in ground water geologic surveillance. Nuclear fusion uses it amongst the other Hydrogen Isotope Deuterium for power generation experiments. Batteries can be powered by Tritium as well, another field of research. In all these applications, safe and precise handling of the gases is key.

Tritium Ultra Syringe Pump
Custom specific syringe pumps with magnetic driven piston(s).
Protium/ Deuterium/ Tritium Ultra Syringe Pump
The smolsys ultra syringe pump allows the compression of gas in a steady and constant manner, up to a defined pressure. A pressure range of some mbar to several bar can be achieved. All pumps are based on the same base but are configured to customer specification.
The pump is completely magnetic driven and thus doesn’t have any rotating sealings to the exterior. The pump housing itself is vented to a vacuum pipe system, allowing to collect even minute traces of gas this also acts as a second safety barrier.

If a simple manual operated production system or a fully automated machine, we provide custom specific integrated solutions for the work with tritium.
Besides engineering and building of automated machines and systems, we can integrate our own “off the shelf” tritium handling products, such as faces sealed all metal bellow valves and other high vacuum components, magnetic driven syringe pumps for high pressure applications, or our new in-line tritium concentration sensor.
Plug & Produce Isotope Labs
Today’s global manufacturing and logistics in a fast-changing environment demand highly flexible production possibilities. On request, we integrate your Gas handling operations in a safe environment. Our individual smolsys RMC (Radio-Medical Container) Labs provide exactly defined interfaces.
The modular labs can be adopted to existing pre- or post-processes without the need to go through complete radiation safety and licensing/ risk analysis again. If needed, access control, personnel or air/ environment surveillance systems are added. All system data can be integrated into existing production/security control systems and is accessible (if requested) via cloud. The fire safety is set to EI 90 by default.

Automated Tritium Microparts manufacturing
GTLS (gaseous Tritium Light Sources) are especially widely used in exit signs, watches and gun sights.
smolsys ltd. offers custom manufacturing of Gaseous Tritium Light Sources (GTLS) to your specification.
GTLS are manufactured from glass capillaries whose inner walls are coated with a phosphorescent pigment. The
capillaries are then pressure-filled with tritium gas. The gas acts as an energy source, providing the power for the lights. GTLS can be manufactured in different colors and brightness. They provide self-powered light for decades and withstand harsh environmental conditions.
We test and certify TLS to MIL Spec and ANSI Norms.
Our approach
“plug & produce” production units, the most efficient and safe way we know.
Working with tritium for decades, we learnt that we need something that protects personnel, while making sure that tritium release to the environment is kept at a lowest achievable level. Also, since we work in the private industry rather than a science lab, we knew that processes need to be cost effective, machines and automation reliable.
We found that the best way to combine everything we need is what we call a “plug & produce” pop-up production cell. It consists of a unit (a special lab container) that includes the critical process, all machines and measuring equipment. The unit itself generates a protected environment. Conditions inside the unit are plannable and constantly monitored. Tritium in air concentration of T2 and HTO, temperature, air flow, air quality, oxygen level, humidity and whatever one would need to run a process in a controlled and reliable manner.
